This Week in Supercross
CHASE SEXTON: Scores his 13th career 450SX Class victory moving him to 12 points off the red plate. He moves into 19th alone on the all-time 450SX Class wins list and his 23rd SMX League win pushes him to 21st alone on that list. His 98th SMX League podium ties him with Justin Barcia and Mike Kiedrowski for 18th all-time. He passed Ezra Lusk and Johnny O’Mara for 17th on the 450SX Class podium list.
COOPER WEBB: Retains the red plate with a runner-up finish, his 10th podium of the season and 73rd of his 450SX Class career (10th all-time). He is inching towards becoming the seventh rider in 450SX Class history with three or more titles (Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael, Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, Bob Hannah, & Jeff Stanton).
KEN ROCZEN: Earns his 163rd career SMX League podium (sixth all-time), 76th 450SX Class podium (seventh all-time), and seventh on the season. He also becomes the 14th athlete in 450SX Class history to make 160 starts, only one behind Jason Anderson for 13th. He is on pace to finish in the top three of the 450SX Class Championship for the sixth time in his illustrious career.
NOTES: Malcolm Stewart (4th): Nails his fourth top five finish of the season and 25th of his 450SX Class career. Joey Savatgy (5th): Grabs first top five of his season after a three round injury break, the sixth of his 450SX Class career in 51 starts and 58th of his SMX League career in 208 starts. Justin Hill (10th): Made his 180th career SMX League start and earned his 32nd 450SX Class top-10 finish. Is seeking his 75th career 450SX Class start in East Rutherford. Justin Barcia (14th) & Kyle Chisholm (18th): Continue to climb the 450SX Class career starts ladder together after making their 178th and 179th 450SX Class starts respectively, eighth and ninth all-time. Dean Wilson (17th): First start of the season filling in for HRC Honda, 128th 450SX Class start of his career (ties Mike Alessi for 22nd all-time), and 12th season making a 450SX Class Main Event (20th all-time). Grant Harlan (20th): 80th SMX League start (22nd in 450SX Class). Jeremy Hand (22nd): 90th SMX League start (13th in 450SX Class).
HISTORY LESSON: The first 450SX Class round in East Rutherford was on June 7, 1987, in Giants Stadium at The Meadowlands. East Rutherford stood as the penultimate round of the 1987 season and Rick Johnson (Honda) won, but Jeff Ward’s fifth place was enough for him to clinch the title that night. Honda dominated the five seasons the 450SX Class visited The Meadowlands (1987-1991), winning all five.
PENULTIMATELY SPEAKING: 7/11 rounds held in East Rutherford were penultimate rounds, including the first five in MetLife Stadium and the first two in Giants Stadium. Only the 1989-1991 and 2023 events weren’t penultimate. East Rutherford has been a Championship clincher three times in 450SX Class history (1987, 1988, and 2016). Three other times the title was clinched prior to East Rutherford (1990, 2014, and 2015) and three times the eventual Champion was within three points of clinching their titles afterwards (1989, 1991, and 2019). Only 2019 and 2023 did East Rutherford feature a serious point standings battle.
VENUE HISTORY: After the five Honda-dominated rounds, Supercross did not return to Giants Stadium before being demolished in 2010. MetLife Stadium was built in its place and the series returned in 2014, remaining on schedule through 2017. 450SX Class racing returned to MetLife in 2019 and 2023, meaning 2025 will be the seventh 450SX Class round held in MetLife and 12th in East Rutherford.
CHAMPIONSHIP %: In 5/11 (45%) 450SX Class rounds in East Rutherford the winner eventually scored the title. In the five round stint in The Meadowlands it only happened twice (Rick Johnson 1988 & Jeff Stanton 1989). In 3/6 MetLife rounds the winner won the title (2014 Ryan Villopoto, 2017 Ryan Dungey, and 2019 Cooper Webb). Justin Barcia won the rain soaked MetLife round in 2023, but Chase Sexton scored the Championship.
RJ HAMPSHIRE: Highest finishing Eastern Divisional athlete with a third, the fourth podium of his season and 25th of his 250SX Class career. He passes Martin Davalos and Stephane Roncada for fourth on the all-time 250SX Class podium list and is only five away from the all-time leader (Nathan Ramsey). Last year’s Western Divisional Champion, he has tied Seth Hammaker for the Championship lead atop the Eastern Divisional standings going into East Rutherford.
SETH HAMMAKER: Philly native retains share of red plate with a fourth-place finish, albeit with a different athlete in Hampshire. It was his 15th career 250SX Class top five finish and 20th top 10 in 26 250SX Class starts. He is looking for his 50th career SMX League start in East Rutherford where he looks to gain sole possession of the red plate for the first time in his career.
TOM VIALLE: Third highest finishing Eastern Divisional athlete with a sixth, the 20th top-10 in 26 250SX Class start for Vialle. He has 44 SMX League top-10 finishes in 54 SMX League starts. He loses his share of the red plate but is only two points off. A win would guarantee sole possession of the red plate, something he has failed to do in this season’s Eastern Divisional, a Championship that has featured seven winners in seven rounds (including Western Divisional athlete Cole Davies who won the E/W Showdown in Philly).
NOTES: Max Vohland (8th): Fourth highest finisher in the Eastern Divisional, 16th top-10 finish in 20 career 250SX Class starts for Vohland. Chance Hymas (10th): Fifth highest finisher in the Eastern Divisional. 17th top-10 finish in 20 career 250SX Class starts. Note:For the first time in SMX League history, a Championship series has started with seven different winners (M. Anstie, L. Kitchen, R. Hampshire, S. Hammaker, N. Thrasher, C. Hymas, & C. Davies). This broke the previous record of six different winners to start the 2021 250 Pro Motocross Championship (J. Lawrence, J. Cooper, J. Swoll, R. Hampshire, H. Lawrence, & J. Martin).
HISTORY LESSON: The first 250SX Class round held in East Rutherford was on June 7th, 1987, and Keith Turpin (Suzuki) won. It was the Eastern Regional finale and Turpin trailed his Suzuki teammate Ron Tichenor by four points when the gate dropped. Tichenor finished runner-up to Turpin to score the Championship by a single point over his teammate, 165-164.
CHAMPIONSHIP %: The winner of the 250SX Class round in East Rutherford has won the 250SX Class Eastern Divisional title in 8/11 races (73%). This is largely due to the number of late season rounds that occurred in the venue’s 250SX Class history. The last three Giants Stadium 250SX Class victors won the title and the first five of MetLife Stadium had before Max Anstie broke the eight athlete Championship streak in 2023.
PENULTIMATELY SPEAKING: In the 11 250SX Class rounds held in East Rutherford, nine have been finales or penultimate rounds of 250SX Class Eastern Divisional racing. 1990 and 2023 are the only two that was neither. For the first time in East Rutherford’s 250SX Class history, the 2023 round included the Western Divisional athletes as part of an East/West Showdown. 2025 will be neither a Penultimate, finale, or Showdown. Instead we get a points battle that is tied atop the standings with multiple other athletes within reach of the red plate.
VENUE HISTORY: The 250SX Class has the same venue history as the 450SX Class in East Rutherford, racing at Giants Stadium from 1987-1991 and MetLife Stadium from 2014-2017; 2019, & 2023. 2025 will be the 12th 250SX Class round held in East Rutherford and seventh in MetLife Stadium.
