The World We Live - Be Positive
Something that really get tiring is the attitude of people on social media, forums and even some of the World media. I have never forgotten why I love motocross and its because of the amazing athletes that perform in it. The amazing feeling of watching men dressed up like roman soldiers from the gladiator days and fighting it out around a rough and tough circuit, which can change as every lap is run and drains these athletes of everything they have.
I just wish everyone had my attitude towards to sport and didn’t want to invest in the negatives of motocross. For instance, how good has this off-season been!!!??? While many people on social media and even a lot of World media like to put shit on our sport, saying promoters are terrible and the sports in trouble, sorry I couldn’t disagree more. I keep hearing, the World supercross is a joke, not enough good riders, tracks are crap, and the negative people just want to try and beat it down, over and over again.
We have a World supercross championship, four rounds in 2024 and from what I understand, eight in 2025, yet still negative people see everything as poor. The promoters can’t do anything correct if you go on social media or forums. WHY, oh WHY, do media and forums create negative energy in our sport, and unfortunately, even some of the World media fall into that trap.
When I first visited a motocross race, the only thing that impressed me was the racers, and the racing. I didn’t care who ran the events, or if the riders got paid, all I was interested in was the racing and the races, and that remains my ONLY focus. So many “fans” love to put shit on our sport and I just don’t get it. I cannot for a second think anyone fell in love with this sport because the promoters or pay wasn't good enough?
I can tell you, without Feld, MXsports and Infront, our sport would have been on it’s knees a long, long time ago and when the World Supercross championship started, so too did the negative comments. SX Global joined the ranks of the big three and of course, people wanted to bag on the series, but in my opinion, its been awesome and what a great way to spend our off-season, enjoying good racing, with riders like Eli Tomac, Ken Roczen, Joey Savatgy, Dean Wilson and many more.
The Australian supercross, which is run by the AME group have also raised their game and it’s been a pleasure to follow. We also have the Aus X Open, also run by the AME group and again, what a brilliant event. I cannot believe its only a month before we all get excited for A1 and the start of the AMA supercross championship, because this off-season has raced by.
I just wish social media, forums and some World media would focus on what is good about our sport, instead of trying to pick apart every negative thing out and rubbish the promoters who have made our sport what it is. A sport with dozens of millionaire riders and a lot of riders with very good livings, much better than your common worker. Sure, it isn’t always rosy, and we lose a lot of riders, who cannot make a go of it, but for a sport as small as motocross, we do okay.
There is more factory support than ever before in MXGP in 2025 and that is because the product is good. The sporting World has changed a lot, all sports have changed, and when you see empty seats at sporting events like a Wimbledon men’s tennis final, or an ashes cricket match at Lords with nearly no spectators, or dwindling crowds at the Masters Golf tournament, you know that television or websites have taken over and the direction of the fans interest, is more online now.
Motocross has also suffered this fate, and while people complain there are no crowds at an Indonesian GP, go take a look at the television coverage for that event, the LIVE WORLDWIDE television coverage. Major channels in France, The Netherlands, Belgium and many other countries and number in the millions (believe me, I have asked Belgian and Dutch television producers and that is the numbers, just for those countries). Why do you think a company like Infront have invested so much in the television/online coverage? Because it’s a big success and if it wasn’t, major television channels wouldn’t touch it. And that is also, why we have more factory riders in the sport than ever before. The Japanese, Italian, British and Austrian companies know the numbers and they continue to add riders to their factory efforts. The promoters in Indonesia also know that the World is watching via television and for them, that is why they invest, not to get an extra 5000 or 10,000 through the gate. That might make the negative people happy, but it isn’t why Indonesia invest in MXGP and have done now for nearly a decade.
China are looking at doubling their GP count in the future and are more than happy with the commercial advantages of having MXGP in their country. Had it not been for Covid, we would have been there since 2019 and contracts for extending their involvement in motocross are already on the table.
When we head to Darwin for an Aussie MXGP round, something people have been begging for, all saying, Australia has to be on the Grand Prix calendar, how about just enjoying the fact Australia is back again, because I can tell you, the industry in Australia is very, very excited and are giving it 100% to make it work. Not just the promoter in Darwin, but the WHOLE industry down under want to invest in the Australian Grand Prix.
When we venture to Ironman in Indiana for the 2025 Monster Energy Motocross of Nations, just sit back and remind yourself how many times you wanted the GP riders racing in USA, against the AMA guys. And please, don’t complain that you might have to drive an hour for your hotel, or the track looks like it’s prepared different, or the fact none of the racers are getting paid, because, when the event has been run, guys like Jett Lawrence, Jeffrey Herlings, Chase Sexton, Tim Gajser, Jorge Prado or anyone else, will tell you, it was the experience of their lives and that experience has nothing to do with dollar signs, but pride of your country. Stop trying to make the MXoN something you want it to be, when the riders love it the way it is, as do the majority of spectators.
We have brilliant riders, from FIM to AMA and the level is so similar at the moment, that its hard to seperate which series has the better riders and that is something we don't get often. I love the fact the series are working together, better than ever and the future is bright, even under these tough economical times. Enjoy it, because there is nothing less fun, than having negative attitude.
