Reed on Lawrence - The Aussies

  • Interview

For 20 years, Australian legend, Chad Reed battled the best riders the sport has ever seen, and came away with a Grand Prix victory, a runner-up spot in the World 250 motocross championship, a couple of MXoN moto wins and a podium with team Australia at that event, two AMA supercross championships and an AMA 450 motocross championship, not to mention a bunch of other international race success.

His rivals, Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart are right up there when talking about the best American racers of all time and Reed was maybe not as good as those two, but he was very, very close. He sat down with American radio station, DMXS and talked about what he thinks will happen in 2025 and his comments on Jett Lawrence are very eye opening.

On HRC Problems

Chad Reed: I don’t follow social or anything like that, I have my people here, there and everywhere and it sounds like the red side, not everything is smooth, or as good as it could or should be. It seems like Chase was really off this time last year, but I have heard nothing but good things and that has nothing to do with the conversation I had with him. It is things I hear from people, and it seems he has hit the ground running. He seems better this year than last. Eli is back to normal Eli. I am just excited for the unknown. Right now, its all talk right, nobody has dominated yet. Do I think there is an individual that has the possibility of doing it, yes, I think so.

Turning It Around

Chad Reed: I look forward to the talk, that is real, because I know it because of the conversations I have with people. So, how do they deal with that, do they get it turned around and even though everything is not perfect the gate will drop every Saturday night. So, who does that the best and that is your champion and there is no way to shy from that.

On Jett Lawrence and Outside Noise

Chad Reed: Jett is really, really, really good and I think there is a lot of pressure on him. He is still really young, he is only 21 I think, and I think there is a lot of pressure on him, internally and externally. How does he deal with that, does he, its just all part of it and he deals with it good, or does he not. This whole Deegan and Australia thing. I am interested maybe more the little things, away from the racing. They are all really good and really clever and it would be hard for me to put money on anyone but Jett, just because he has more tools in the box than anyone else. I also know not everything runs smoothly and perfectly, so how does he deal with all that?

What Impresses Him About Jett Lawrence

Chad Reed: When I think of Jett, speed never, I mean, you have to be fast to win right, so I know he is fast, but for me, its more than speed. It is how Jett produces speed different to everyone else. He is clearly, obviously fast, but his ability to always get good starts has always been his strength. Then also his ability to manage the race, go fast when you need to, eat roost when you need to and he seems to put himself in good places, and that is what I think, when I think of Jett. That is his strength, his ability to just get it done, outside of the mud. We haven’t seen a lot of anything, that he can’t do yet. If there is a section on the track, he is able to do it and figure it out, during a race. If there is a sand section that is challenging, he is able to extract pace and speed out of it. I don’t ever think he is so fast, but his ability to pick it apart and make the most of it.
