Maxime Renaux Interview - 2025
This weekend, it's finally happening: the start of the MXGP World Championship in Argentina. The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team is fielding the same three riders as last year: Maxime Renaux (24), Jago Geerts (24) and Calvin Vlaanderen (28). The trio has overcome the injury setbacks of 2024 and is hungry for success.
Just like last year, the season kicks off in Argentina. However, the stunning location of Villa la Angostura - surrounded by lakes and mountains - has been replaced by a brand-new track in Córdoba, Argentina’s second-largest city. But before the gate drops, we ask our riders a few questions. Today, it’s up to Maxime Renaux, the 2021 World Champion MX2.
You missed a large part of 2024 due to a foot fracture. How is your foot now?
Renaux: "Much better. I had been dealing with that injury since 2023. Last year, I underwent an additional surgery, and that was the right decision. My foot will never be the same as before, but it’s good enough to race at the highest level. I don’t feel any discomfort during races."
So, you're starting this World Championship in top shape?
Renaux: "Exactly. My preparation went really well, and most importantly, I’m happy to be healthy at the start of this championship. I’m ready."
You competed in two preseason races: you finished second at Hawkstone Park and won both motos in Lacapelle-Marival. What does that mean?
Renaux: "A little bit of everything and nothing at the same time. On one hand, I’m obviously very satisfied with those two races. I felt good, and my Yamaha is running smoothly. But I can’t get too fixated on those results. I also learned a few things. What exactly? My starts, for example, are still a point of improvement. I want to and need to get better. I’m really looking forward to the first Grand Prix, that’s when I’ll truly see where I stand."
It might be an obvious question, but what are your ambitions for this year?
Renaux: "I want to win the world title. A simple answer, but a difficult goal to achieve. I’m well aware of that. My second goal is to stay healthy throughout the season and avoid any serious injuries."
The first GP will be on a brand-new track. Do you like that?
Renaux: "It’s unknown territory for everyone, so nobody has an advantage in terms of track knowledge. I know very little about the circuit in Córdoba. I’ve heard it’s somewhat sandy, but we’ll see. During my preparation, I raced once on sand and once on a hard-packed track. Both went well. So, I’m ready."
Fast forward to the end of September. Maxime Renaux will be satisfied if...
Renaux: "... he has given 100 percent in every race, which then results in a world title."
