Lucas Coenen - Closing The Gap

No doubt about the domination of Belgian and Dutch riders in the 2024 MX2 World championship and it was little surprise that the Nestaan Husqvarna factory riders, Kay De Wolf and Lucas Coenen both won in Indonesia earlier this month. With both rounds held in Lombok, the Husky boys just showed us all, that the Austrian bikes are easily the best in the 250 class, with only KTM and Husqvarna with GP wins until now in 2024.

Of course, the KTM boys, Sasha Coenen and Liam Everts have GP wins and the Husky men, Kay De Wolf and Lucas Coenen continue to collect silverware in 2024. For Lucas Coenen, his win in Lombok II was more than a little special as he also on the Saturday qualifier, going 1-1-1 for the weekend and gaining points on De Wolf in the championship.

Saturday in Lombok II was a great way for Lucas Coenen to begin his Lombok GP and while he battled his brother early, he came out on top to claim yet another race win.

“Saturday wasn’t bad,” Lucas Coenen said. “The start was good, the jump was good, but my brother is like 30 kilos, and he has a big margin on me and closed me down. I had a good start in P2, and I followed him, then he made a big gap in the beginning, and I closed him down and when I passed him, I made a little mistake in the corner, and he passed me again. He then went into the (advertising) boards, and I went back to P1, and the race was almost over, so I won.”

After losing to his team-mate (De Wolf) in the first Lombok, you said you wanted to come back strong and I guess he did that in the Saturday qualifier, which was good for his confidence for the Sunday racing.

“We only did the qualification race on the Saturday and the two sessions, so we could give it everything we had. I felt the Sunday would be a good day for me. Sunday, the second race was way easier than the first race. The temperatures had been really high - and I felt like people were really suffering with it. I cooled down pretty well in the break between the two races. I just tried to do my own thing in the second race, pushing where I needed to, but trying to control the pace. I feel really good about this result, and I’m looking forward to keeping on going at this level!”

Coenen has had something of a rollercoaster season, and is still 49 points behind fellow Husky rider, De Wolf, in the championship standings, with the Dutchman holding 576 points to 527 from the Belgian, but you just know, they will battle hard over the final half of the 2024 championship.

Last year at Loket, Coenen finished with 8-8 results, but he has shown in 2024 that he is a much-improved rider, having already won a handful of GPs this year. Whatever he can do the close the points gap to De Wolf, you can be sure he will do. Battle stations for the Nestaan Husqvarna boys, no doubt.
