The Dortmund supercross, which will run this coming weekend, has a very long and famous history. It was back in 1983 when the current World 250 motocross champion Georges Jobe won the opening night of this brilliant German event. While Jobe started the weekend with a win, it was German rider Bernd Betzelbacher who won the first ever King of Dortmund.

Some big names have appeared at this event, with 1994 World 125cc champion, Bobby Moore winning the two nights in 1989 and thus being crowned the King and a year later another World motocross champion, Pekka Vehkonen (1995 125cc champion) won two of the three nights, with American legend and six time AMA motocross champion, Broc Glover winning the first ever Friday night show. Glover being involved was not enough to stop Vehkonen being crowned the King.

Glover did return in 1991 and won the overall and it was this year that saw the American’s take over for some time. Eric Kehoe won in 1992 and 1993, Mike Jones wins in 1994, Doug Dubach in 1995, Mike Craig in 1996 and Guy Cooper in 1997.

Thierry Bethys stopped the American domination with the overall win in 1998, followed by Marko Kovalainen in 1999 and 2000. World 125cc motocross champion Grant Langston won a night in 2000, as did Australian, Craig Anderson, both AMA regulars in the future years.

Anderson won the overall in 2001 and his cousin, Chad Reed won the Saturday night overall. Names like Mike Alessi, Larry Ward and many other leading AMA riders ventured to Dortmund, with AMA champion, Mike Brown winning in 2008, another AMA regular, Kyle Chisholm won in 2010, and Tyler Bower won three years running in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Covid robbed us of the event in 2021 and the Dortmund Supercross didn’t return until 2023, when former World MX2 champion, Jordi Tixier won with another fine Frenchman, Cedric Soubeyras winning last year and entering this year’s event as the defending champion, and probably the favourite to add to his 2024 victory.
