Kay De Wolf - World MX2 Champ
Nestaan Husqvarna factory rider, Kay De Wolf has become the first Dutchman (without the name Herlings) to win a World title in 30 years. It was Pedro Tragter who won the 1993 125cc title who was the last (other) Dutchman to be crowned.
The birthday boy didn’t win the GP, but he also never let anyone near his red plate, from the first round, until the last. The GP win went to team-mate Lucas Coenen, who went 1-1, but the all-important World MX2 title went to De Wolf, despite a 7-2 score.
For the GP overall, it was Lucas Coenen 50 points, Andrea Adamo 40pts, Thibault Benistant 38pts, Kay de Wolf 36pts, Simon Laengenfelder 32pts.
Kay De Wolf: Yes, it is amazing, on my birthday, so many emotions, this team since 2018, they kept believing in me, through 125cc, EMX250 and then MX2 and I couldn’t do it without this team. My family, my friends, everyone around me, we are going to celebrate this one for sure.
MX2 Moto Two
De Wolf holeshot the second MX2 moto and it could be clear sailing to that MX2 World title, Lucas Coenen was second, then Benistant, Haarup, Reisulis, Oliver, Langenfelder, Adamo, Zanchi and Prugnieres. Coenen all over De Wolf for the lead, but the Dutchman not allowing his Belgian team-mate to get past.
Lap one and it was de Wolf, Coenen, Benistant, Haarup, Reisulis, Oliver, Zanchi, Langenfelder, Adamo and Prugnieres. De Wolf allowed Coenen to pass, just moving over and slowing up. Benistant all over de Wolf, but you cannot see the Dutchman fighting with just a handful of points needed.
Lap five and it was Coenen with an 8.8 second lead over De Wolf, with De Wolf two seconds ahead of third placed man, Benistant, then came Haarup, Reisulis, Zanchi, Oliver, Adamo, Prugnieres and McLellan 10th. Lap seven and the lead was 12 seconds, but it didn’t matter as de Wolf was riding very smooth and taking no risks.
Nine laps in and not a lot happening as Coenen led De Wolf by 16 seconds, with Benistant in third, a second behind de Wolf, then came Haarup, Reisulis, Adamo, Zanchi, McLellan, Oliver and Prugnieres.
Lap 13 and the lead was 21 seconds, and very little happening in the moto, Reisulis dropped to 10th place and Adamo moved into fifth place. Plenty of close racing, as MX2 always delivers. Coenen wins the moto, de Wolf finishes second, but win the World championship.
