Jett Lawrence - What Legends Think

ESPN in America, did a very, very cool story on Jett Lawrence last year, and asked a lot of the legends of the sport their opinion of Jett. Now, we here at MXlarge see him as the future GOAT of the sport and with six major AMA titles and the defending MXoN champion with Team Australia, he has already done more than most of the legends before him and he's just 21 years old.

Those championships so far (including his two AMA SX 250 titles) are the 2021 AMA Motocross 250cc, 2022 AMA Supercross 250cc East, 2022 AMA Motocross 250cc, 2023 AMA Supercross 250cc West, 2023 AMA Motocross 450cc, 2023 SMX 450cc, 2024 AMA Supercross 450cc and 2024 SMX 450cc.

Crazy to think at just 21 years of age, he is already a legend. Nobody in the sports history has started their career like this Aussie kid and its hard to see anyone stop his momentum.

Below are some very cool comments from legends like Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Ryan Dungey, Travis Pastrana, also the parents of Jett, his manager, and MXsport front man, Davey Coombs.

Jett Lawrence: I remember the first time I lost a race. I was 4 and got second. I bawled my eyes out. My first 250 EMX race in Europe, I was 14 racing against guys in their 20s and 30s and I didn't even qualify. I was bawling then, too. I hated that feeling. On the start line, I always think, 'Could this be the moto when I get beat? ‘That fear is what pours fuel on the fire.

Ryan Dungey: He's a Michael Jordan. Whether you're an amateur or a pro, you are studying Jett. Most riders think they have to muscle the bike and they're hard on the gas and override the track. Jett has good throttle control and isn't bombing into corners and grabbing a handful of brake. If other guys are braking 40 feet before a turn, he's braking at 60 feet and letting off the gas early. It's fast but looks effortless and you're going to see his style more. If I was still racing, I'd try everything Jett is doing.

Travis Pastrana: There's something special about Jett.

Jeremy McGrath: We all see it coming. I think he is handling it fairly well at the moment but it’s twice the workload when you get to the next class. You are not going to be able to do it on raw talent, and he has a ton of it, and he is fun to watch, it seems like he is a gear higher than most of the guys – he’s really smooth.

Ricky Carmichael: He does things on a motorcycle no one can do. He's poetry in motion. I think he has the most skill on a motorcycle I have ever seen – he’s top three easily. Even when he crashes he makes it graceful. His bike skill is unbelieveable but I think he has a lot fo distactions. To win at the 450 level you can’t have distractions.

Davey Coombs: Jett has Pastrana's charisma, McGrath's showmanship, James Stewart's creativity and Carmichael's work ethic. But whether he is going to revolutionize the sport remains to be seen.

Darren “Father” Lawrence: He would ride his bike until it ran out of fuel. He'd wee his pants. He was only 4 or 5!" Emma (Jett mother) interjects. "I'd have to carry the gas drum down to wherever he was. I'd be like, 'Dude, couldn't you stop and do a wee?' He'd look at me as though I was stupid. Of course, he couldn't stop. When you have your first child, you give them lots of verbal instructions. Watch out. Don't trip on that step. Get your hand off the stove. By the time the third one comes, he watches his brothers, or he just trips over the step and learns.

Lucas Mirtl (Jett manager): In the '90s, McGrath made motocrossers the cool guys in the bar. Then we bred robots who wanted everyone to know they're as fit as triathletes. But this is entertainment. People want the cool guys. No one wants to know you eat rice cakes and cycle four hours every morning. When you win, show everyone that it meant something to you. When you're pissed, show that you're pissed. Jett is genuine and relatable.
