Herlings Wins Lommel - Perfect
Red Bull KTM Factory rider Jeffrey Herlings has had the perfect day in Lommel today, going 1-1 and gaining a massive 16 points on series leader Tim Gajser in the championship chase and six on Jorge Prado. Second overall was defending MXGP champion Jorge Prado with 2-2 scores and he too made up a stack of points on series leader Tim Gajser, who finished with 5-4 finishes for fourth overall. Third overall was Romain Febvre with 4-3 scores.
Jeffrey Herlings: It was incredible. I mean, it was a calculated race. I wanted to start with the speed and then go for the sprint and 1-1 in Lommel, its been a while since that happen. Thanks to Pit and everyone from KTM, I know they are watching. Looking forward to the next one. I just need to improve my starts. If I can get top three starts, we do have something coming for the starts and I think we can fight. Six races to go and we came from a long way back and we just go race by race and see how it goes.
Jorge Prado: Its been a good weekend, I won the qualifier and twice second places today. In that second race "the bullet" was coming. I did my best to beat him, but he was too good today. I look forward to Sweden now. We made up a lot of points.
Championship points are now Tim Gajser 705 points, Jorge Prado 681 pts, Jeffrey Herlings 667pts. So, Gajser holds an advantage of 24 points over Prado and Herlings 37 points off the red plate and just 13 points behind Prado.
MXGP Moto Two
Prado again in the lead in MXGP moto two, ahead of Seewer, Febvre, Herlings, Guadagnini, Bonacorsi, Bogers, Gajser, Horgmo and Sterry 10th. Herlings quickly past Seewer as was Febvre and Mewse 19th. Gajser quickly into fifth place. Gajser into fourth place and looking very aggressive.
Prado flying with a 2.6 second lead after one lap. Herlings not close enough to Febvre to pass, but Febvre then crashed and handed Herlings second. The gap though was already six seconds. Prado knows he needs to push really, really hard early. Vlaanderen also crashed and was in 19th place. Mewse up to 15th place and Sterry 14th. Gajser into third and the big three are first, second and third.
Two laps in and the lead was 6.1 seconds with Gajser 8.1 behind Prado. The top four spread out, with Prado 5.6 over Herlings, Herlings three seconds over Gajser and Gajser three seconds ahead of Febvre.
Not a lot changing in the opening laps as the big four stay separated, but the gap between Prado and Herlings was now 4.6 seconds and Prado not getting away as much as in the first moto. Gajser seven seconds behind Herlings and Febvre trying to stick with Gajser in fourth. Lap five and the lead was 3.5 and Herlings is already making his charge. Herlings coming for Prad and the gap was 2.6 seconds on lap 6.
Herlings all over Prado for the lead, although a small mistake by Herlings gave Prado some small advantage. Lap seven and the Dutchman is all over the GasGas rider. Herlings into the lead, but Prado takes the lead back. Gajser 14 seconds back in third. Herlings into the lead and looking invincible today. Prado looking beautiful on the bike, but Herlings just stronger it seems in these conditions.
Eight laps and the lead was 2.3 seconds, with Gajser 13 seconds back, and the top ten was Herlings, Prado, Gajser, Febvre, Bonacorsi, Seewer, Horgmo, Coldenhoff, Bogers, and Guadagnini. Vlaanderen still 14th and Mewse still 15th.
Lap nine and the lead was four seconds, with Gajser 17 seconds back and Febvre not letting the HRC man get away and might be able to grab his own points on Gajser. After 10 laps, riders inside the top ten already more than a minute behind Herlings and Prado was 5.5 seconds off the leader.
Febvre all over Gajser, but the Slovenian isn’t handing third place to the Frenchman just yet. Lap 11 and the lead by Herlings was 7.6 seconds. Febvre into third place and Gajser really struggling today. Lap 12 the lead was nine seconds and “The Bullet” is cruising out front. 13 laps and the lead was 10 seconds, with Febvre 18 seconds off Herlings and Gajser 27 seconds behind the leader. Herlings wins the moto and the Grand Prix and goes home, very, very happy.
