Gajser Wins - Herlings Stars

  • Race Report

In a drama filled MXGP moto two, Tim Gajser has won the GP with a very consistent 3-1 performance and Jorge Prado went 2-2 for second overall, but the star of the day was Jeffrey Herlings, who won the opening moto, then crashed in the second corner of the second moto and then crashed again when he ran into the back of Bonacorsi trying to pass.

The Dutchman got up in last place after the first crash and then rode like a demon to get all the way to fourth (he nearly got Vlaanderen for third) and finish third overall, with 1-4. Not a GP win, but damn, what a performance by the KTM man. Bring on Lommel!!!

Tim Gajser: It was a good weekend. It isn’t my favourite track, but I gave my best. In the first moto I struggled and got third but won the second one and we are working hard and it paid off. It is a big one, for sure on a track you always struggle. Since I come here, I never enjoyed it, and many years trying. We made many steps with the bike and thanks to everyone. This is a special one.

Jorge Prado: I would say, three P2's so consistent. I always struggle with this track with traction, I just tried to manage the points for the championship. To be honest, not happy because I wanted to get points on Tim and I lost points, but we have some sand races coming and I have been riding sand a lot recently.

Jeffrey Herlings: The first one and a half laps was maximum chaos! Guadagnini crashed on the first turn and I just went over him, I was tenth I think going into the second turned and someone brake checked and I hit his rear wheel and crashed, I was then dead last. Made up 15 places in one and half laps and I think it was Bonacorsi he got a highsider out of a turn and he hit my front wheel and I crashed again! I bent my handlebars and almost made it to third, it was really closed. Third overall today and next up is Lommel so looking forward to it. I had an idea where I could pass Vlaanderen but I just couldn’t make it happen, the last three turn were just following and I couldn’t pass him there, I had to give up. Also I was tired, third overall is okay for this track.

Championship points are now Tim Gajser 663 points, Jorge Prado 627pts, Jeffrey Herlings 608pts. Gajser just continued to build and stay very, very consistent. Gajser, not always the star, but without question, the best.

MXGP Moto Two

Herlings blocked in the start, so well back and then crashed in the second corner as he tried to pass riders, his championship looked over, unless he could do something very special from last place.

Prado led from Gajser, with Herlings in last place. Third was Vlaanderen, then Febvre, Bogers, Guillod, Seewer, Pancar, Paturel, and Boncacorsi in 10th. Herlings quickly into 24th, but he needs to do something very special.

After a lap Herlings already 13th and flying. Herlings another mistake as he rode into the back of another rider in 11th place and he dropped back to 16th. Herlings again quickly into 14th place, but two crashes in two laps won’t cut it for a GP win and those major points.

Prado looking very sharp as he controls the race, but Gajser not letting him get too far ahead. Herlings into 13th, and then 12th. Three laps in and the Dutchman is now into 11th place and you can see him getting all the way up to the top five, but hard to imagine him getting to Prado and Gajser.

Prado and Gajser still close together, and Herlings needs these two to get into a war at the front and slow each other up. Top ten on lap four was Prado, Gajser, Vlaanderen, Febvre, Bogers, Seewer, Guillod, Paturel, Coldenhoff and Herlings into 10th and 22 seconds off the leaders. Herlings all over Coldenhoff, Guillod and Paturel and looking likely to be in seventh in no time.

Herlings into seventh as he passed three riders in short time, and now chasing Seewer and Bogers in sixth and fifth. Herlings into sixth place as Bogers crashed out. On lap six it was Prado with a 1.3 second lead over Gajser, then Vlaanderen, Febvre, Seewer, Herlings, Coldenhoff, Paturel, Guillod, and Pancar 10th.

Gajser all over Prado for the lead and Herlings closing up on Seewer quickly. Amazingly, Herlings amazingly into fifth place and just 23 seconds off the leads, despite riding through heavy traffic. 16 minutes and two laps remaining, can the Dutchman catch the leaders? On lap seven he clocked the quickest lap of the moto.

Herlings again the quickest lap of the moto and Gajser takes the lead and pushed Prado out of the way. Elbow toe elbow and both riding a little dirty as Gajser pays Prado back for the Spaniards brake check in Indonesia. Herlings now just 19 seconds off the leaders and 10 seconds off the pace of Febvre, in fourth place.

With 13 minutes and two laps to go, Herlings needs a miracle, but he is on the GP podium and again clocked the quickest, even quicker than Gajser and Prado in first and second. Gajser opens the lead to 2.3 seconds and Herlings just eight seconds behind Febvre. Herlings still making ground on Gajser as the gap is 17 seconds. Herlings gapped Seewer now by 12 seconds.

10 minutes to go and this is usually when Herlings turns it on, but has he used too much energy already?Herlings now 15 seconds behind Gajser. The Dutchman can win this moto the way he is riding. Needs to be under 10 seconds with maybe five laps remaining. Herlings 12 seconds off Prado and man, this might get exciting.

Herlings 16 seconds off Gajser and just five seconds behind Febvre. On lap 12 the top ten was Gajser, Prado, Vlaanderen, Febvre, Herlings, Seewer, Coldenhoff, Paturel, Coldenhoff, Paturel, Van Doninck and Guillod.

Gajser held a 5.6 second lead over Prado, with Vlaanderen nine seconds back, then Febvre 14 seconds off Gajser and Herlings 17 seconds off the leader. Febvre has a problem and Herlings is all over him. Herlings into fourth and Vlaanderen the next rider to be taken by the Dutchman.

Lap 14 and Gajser held a 5.2 second lead over Prado, and Vlaanderen nine seconds behind with Herlings some seven seconds off the South African. Around five laps remaining and Herlings on the podium in a stunning performance.

Rather amazing that Herlings was just 14 seconds off the leader and really put on a show for the public. Two laps remaining and lead by Gajser over Herlings in fourth was 11 seconds. Herlings all over Vlaanderen for third place. Herlings bike swapping backwards and forward as he tried to get to Vlaanderen, but the Dutchman gave up the chase I the final lap, finishing fourth behind Gajser, Prado and Vlaanderen.
