Gajser Goes 2-1 in Italy
HRC factory rider Tim Gajser made up for a mistake in the opening moto, that cost him a race win, to come back in the second moto, take the holeshot and run away with the race. It looked as early as lap three that the Slovenian was cruising.
Tim Gajser: I mean, overall I have to be happy, these races are good training and the first race wasn’t best, we tried something, and I wasn’t feeling comfortable and I got arm pump 10 minutes into the race and I battled with Lucas a little and the second race we made some changes and I felt comfortable even in the sighting lap and I cannot wait to start the GPs.
So, with 1-1 in Mantova and 2-1 this weekend, the favourite to win the MXGP championship of 2025 can head to Argentina with some good form. Lucas Coenen on the Red Bull KTM Factory machine was second with 1-8 and Fantic factory rider, Andrea Bonacorsi third overall with 5-3 finishes.
Gajser with the holeshot in the second MXGP moto, but Ducati into the lead as Guadagnini took the lead, a historical moment in our sport as the Italian legend led a high classed field. Gajser quickly back into the lead, but brilliant by Ducati and Guadagnini. Third was Monticelli, then Seewer, Tuani, Bassi, Gifting, Coldenhoff, Bonacorsi and Pancar 10th.
Lucas Coenen quickly into eight place and on lap one it was Gajser, Guadagnini, Monticelli, Seewer, Gifting, Bonacorsi, Coldenhoff, Coenen, Tuani and Pancar 10th. Ducati second and fourth, just brilliant this. Seewers bike skipping around a little, and Coenen moved into seventh spot with a pass on Coldenhoff.
Gajser already with a five second lead and really making up for his mistake on moto one. Coenen all over Gifting and Seewer and looking to get to the front ASAP. Gotta love the aggressive style of Coenen on the big bike. Coenen pushing too hard trying to pass Gifting in the air, and ran off the track, got out of shape and fell. Fortunately, it wasn’t a big crash, but it looked a little scary. He must have scared himself.
Gajser already looks like he is cruising out front, with 11.3 seconds on lap three over second placed Guadganini. Coenen back in 10th place and 28 seconds off the leaders. Seewer passed Monticelli and into fourth, and this track really looking dangerous as the sun was setting and huge ruts started looking deeper and deeper.
On lap six it was Gajser with a 20 second lead over Gifting, who had moved into second, then Guadagnini, Seewer, Monticelli, Bonacorsi, Coenen, Coldenhoff, Pancar and Bogers 10th. Great to see Seewer pushing Guadagnini as both Ducati’s show around the hard pack. They look a lot better this week than in the sand of Mantova.
Coenen charging hard as he passed Monticelli for fifth and next was Bonacorsi, Seewer and Gaudagnini. This Belgian kid has some big balls and looks stunning. An early tip, this kid wins some GPs in 2025. As I type that, Coenen gets out of shape in a corner and nearly goes down, but still chasing Bonacorsi and Seewer.
Coenen passed Bonacorsi and then Seewer. We have the new Jeffrey Herlings charge right here with this kid. Coenen then crashed and lost all that momentum, now back in 8th again. Lap 10 it was Gajser, Gifting, Guadagnini, Bonacorsi, Monticelli, Coldenhoff, Seewer, Pancar, Coenen and Koch. Seewer seemingly out of the race with a bike issue. Gajser wins from Gifting and Bonacorsi.
