Febvre Wins MXGP on Saturday
Kawasaki factory rider Romain Febvre has won the MXGP qualifier with a start to finish victory ahead of series leader, Tim Gajser of the HRC factory team and Jeremy Seewer in third on the Factory Ducati machine.
Febvre led the MXGP qualifier from Lapucci, Gajser, Gifting, Fernandez, Seewer, Cairoli, Renaux, Toendel, and Coldenhoff. Coenen down in the first corner and Herlings back in 30th place. Coenen quickly into 35th place after some quick passes.
Lapucci into the lead as he passed Febvre and Gifting moved past Gajser for third place. Cairoli a very steady sixth still, as Cairoli moved into fifth place, but then Fernandez fights back to stop his charge. Gajser back into third and Cairoli dropping spots quickly, as he seemed to have bike issues with damaged spokes.
Gifting also down and the top ten was suddenly Febvre, Gajser, Lapucci, Seewer, Renaux, Coldenhoff, Pancar, Vlaanderen, Monticelli, and Watson a nice 10th. Febvre held a five second lead over Gajser, then Lapucci 11seconds off the pace, then came Seewer, Renaux, Coldenhoff, Pancar, Vlaanderen, Fernandez and Monticelli 10th. Mitch Evans on his return in 16th place.
Coenen into 16th place and Herlings still well back in 24th place. Miles off the pace as he works his way back. Crazy battle between Seewer, Lapucci, Renaux and Coldenhoff. Fernandez also not far off that group. Febvre getting away from Gajser as the lead turned to 6.4 seconds.
Fernandez off the track, but returned not losing a spot and then the Spaniard moved into third place with a pass on Lapucci, who was also swallowed up by Seewer and Renaux. Fernandez looking very fast.
Lap seven and the lead by Febvre was 7.3 seconds, with Fernandez 25 seconds off the leader, followed by Seewer, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Coldenhoff, Watson, Pancar and Bonacorsi 10th. Coenen 16th and Herlings not making any passes in 24th. Evans was 20th.
Easy work for Febvre with the lead 8.4 seconds and Gajser nearly 20 seconds ahead over Fernandez and that is pretty much how it finished, although Fernandez penalized for his off-track journey and Seewer gets third going by the officials.
