Dortmund - The Track Builder
Track builder Freddy Verherstraeten has reached deep into his bag of tricks for the anniversary edition of the ADAC Supercross Dortmund. The circuit in the Westfalenhalle will be around 70 metres longer in 2025 and after a few years there will also be a tunnel again.
"An underpass is always a very nice element when the drivers cross the track," says the Belgian. "In addition, this gives us the opportunity to build six instead of four lanes in the longitudinal direction." What sounds simple in his words is a great challenge, especially in the development phase of the course. The 6×6-metre substructure must be covered with a layer of clay soil. "That's where the excavators reach their limits," Verherstraeten grins.
Key points in an SX course in the Westfalenhalle are always the so-called rhythm sections, i.e. jump combinations that can be approached differently by the riders. There will be three of these in 2025. Of course, the obligatory washboard is not to be missed, where are the wheat from the chaff in the big SX1 and SX2 classes. In addition, there are also some steep curves that are good for spectacular block pass maneuvers.
The start does not run longitudinally through the middle, but slightly diagonally across. "The distance to the first corner is thus shortened from around 40 to 30 metres. It's always about losing as little space as possible in the small hall due to the start," says Verherstraeten. "But that's enough for the peloton to get into position for turn one. We will definitely see spectacular hole shots."
The new track length of around 370 metres now offers advantages for the drivers, as there will be a tendency to lap them later. "I think the new track length suits the drivers," says Verherstraeten. "They are used to completely different rounds from the outdoor season."
