Coenen - Total Domination!!!
Red Bull KTM factory rider Lucas Coenen continues to improve and continues to show us, he is a serious contender for the 2025 MXGP championship.
The young Belgian took the lead early, then quickly put a huge gap between himself and the field. In the mid-stages of the moto, Glenn Coldenhoff started closing the gap, but the 18 year old quickly picked up his paced and controlled the race until the end. Even a small error late, didn't stop this teenager from showing the World, he has arrived.
Second in the moto was Coldenhoff, and third another Fantic factory rider, Andrea Bonacorsi in third spot. In the championship points, both Coenen and Coldenhoff made up some ground on series leader, Tim Gajser, who finished in fifth place.
Championship points are now Tim Gajser 193 points, Romain Febvre 156pts, Lucas Coenen 141pts, Glenn Coldenhoff 136pts and Maxime Renaux 125pts.
Lucas Coenen: I had a good moto going, second in the start and I felt okay and made a gap and didn't rush anything. I saw a yellow flag and I put the bike in neutral and in the sand you can tip it over. I managed to end it good and second moto, we try our best. From my seat I took a good start (in the qualification race on Saturday) and everyone was going slow and I lost my rhythm and then got some arm pump, but then I passed people and got to Tim and I was watching him and trying to think where I could pass, I tried in the last corner, but he is too smart for me. I am building and learning and gaining experience and for the moment I am gaining fast.
MXGP Moto One
Seewer with the lead in the opening MXGP moto, from Coenen, Horgmo, Gifting, Bonacorsi, Coldenhoff, Febre, Gajser, Fernandez and Watson 10th. Herlings 14th after not too bad a start, but lost places quickly. Coenen into the lead and Gajser into fifth.
Coldenhoff into fourth place and as expected riding well in the deep, rough sand track. Gajser into sixth place and going after Coldenhoff with Febvre behind the HRC man. Coenen already with a nine second lead, and this kid is going to be hard to beat.
Coldenhoff into third positon passing Gifting and the top ten was Coenen, Horgmo, Coldenhoff, Gifting, Bonacorsi, Gajser, Febvre, Fernandez, Watson and Seewer 10th. Herlings way back in 17th spot. The lead was 10.7 seconds and Coenen is owning the opposition in this one.
Coenen on fire with a 11.8 second lead over Horgmo, with Coldenhoff catching the Norwegian, and Gifting losing ground on the Dutchman. Gajser 18 seconds off the leader and Febvre making life tough for the red plate owner. Rider struggling were Geerts in 12th, Vlaanderen in 15 and Seewer after a great start in 16th place.
Coldenhoff into second and Bonacorsi in third and the top ten was Coenen with a 17.6 second lead, then Coldenhoff, Bonacorsi, Horgmo, Gifting, Gajser, Febvre, Fernandez, Watson and Van De Moosdijk 10th.
Coldenhoff catching Coenen as the lead was still 16.7 seconds and Bonacorsi also showing good speed just a couple of seconds off his Fantic team-mate. Top ten was Coenen, Coldenhoff, Bonacorsi, Horgmo, Gajser, Febvre, Fernandez, Gifting, Watson and Guillod in 10th.
Gajser moved past Horgmo to move into fourth place and was five seconds off Bonacorsi in third. Coldenhoff now just 15.2 ahead and has the Belgian blown himself out on this very tough circuit? Coldenhoff now 14.8 behind Coenen, and Febvre also passed Horgmo and right onto Gajser again.
Febvre moved past Gajser and into fourth position, but seven seconds off third placed Bonacorsi. The lead by Coenen was now 13.9 seconds and Coldenhoff definitely making ground on Coenen, with around eight minutes remaining. Down to 12.9 seconds and Coldenhoff is coming.
The gap was 11.8 seconds but with just three minutes and two laps remaining, it seemed unlikely the Dutchman would catch the Belgian. Bonacorsi all over Coldenhoff for second and both 12 seconds behind Coenen. Then came Febvre, Gajser, Fernandez, Horgmo, Watson, Van de Moosdijk and Guillod. Coenen stalled the bike and allowed both Fantics to close up to just a couple of seconds, but Coenen wins it from Coldenhoff and Bonacorsi.
