Coenen Perfect - Gajser DNF
On a day the MXGP series might have lost series leader, Tim Gajser (with injury), the young Belgian, Lucas Coenen made his first serious challenge to this year’s World MXGP championship with a sensational 1-1 performance in Switzerland. It was the 11th GP win of his short career. If Gajser is out for some races, don’t be surprised if the Red Bull KTM factory rider is suddenly a serious contender for a World title.
Second overall was Kawasaki factory rider Romain Febvre with 6-2 and third was Ducati factory rider Jeremy Seewer with 7-3, after a last lap pass on Jeffrey Herlings and sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Championship points are now Tim Gajser 305 points; Romain Febvre 278pts, Lucas Coenen 227pts, Glenn Coldenhoff 224pts and Maxime Renaux 188pts.
Lucas Coenen: After Saturday I didn't expect this with a lot of arm pump, but I nailed the start and got the holeshots. I hope Tim is okay. I saw him on the side of the track and hope he is okay. To go 1-1, I am speechless and I am going to enjoy this. It was a good weekend, but this win is for the people who doubted me (and my brother) and said we crash too much and I showed the World with 1-1. I didn't expect this on a track that doesn't suit me. Tough times make it good.
Romain Febvre: I was fast this weekend. Yesterday wasn't good, and to take a good start was difficult and you get full or roost and you can see that (a swollen lip). I am happy to finish on the podium and lets keep going, but I want one more step to win.
Jeremy Seewer: Ducati's first podium is huge and we worked hard, started from zero and then here at home, on home soil, with good weather, the best day of my life. The second moto didn't start well, because I got a stone on my leg and couldn't feel anything, but I am so happy.
MXGP Moto Two
Coenen with the holeshot from Gajser and Herlings, then Renaux, Guillod, Seewer, Bonacorsi, Febvre, Coldenhoff, and Ludwig. Renaux moved past Herlings and Gajser hounding Coenen for the overall victory. Fernandez back in 29th position.
Gajser looking very aggressive and putting pressure on Coenen. Herlings holding off Bonacorsi and Guillod. Gajser a big crash as the bike flipped him off and dropping back quickly and seemingly hurt. Gajser being taken off the track by the ambulance crew and out of the moto.
Coenen now with a 2.5 second lead over Renaux, then Herlings, Bonacorsi, Febvre, Seewer, Horgmo, Watson, Coldenhoff and Ludwig. Guillod also out of the race after holding down fifth place.
Lap six and its Coenen with 2.3 over Renaux, Herlings 7.2 back, then Bonacorsi, Febvre, Seewer, Horgmo, Watson, Coldenhoff and Ludwig. Gajser still getting help from the medics and his shoulder in a sling. It doesn’t look good as the pain on his face is evident. Really a pity for the man many of us had already given the World title.
Coenen 6.5 ahead of Renaux, with Herlings and Bonacorsi battling for third place, then Febvre, Seewer, Horgmo, Watson, Coldenhoff and Van De Moosdijk. Bonacorsi down and dropping some places as that gives Herlings a nice break in third and Bonacorsi back in seventh now.
Febvre into fourth and that means major points for his challenge to the injured Gajser and that red plate. Both Coenen and Febvre making up points today. Febvre all over Herlings for third place and more points for the Frenchman if he can pass the Dutchman.
Lap 14 and it was Coenen, Renaux, Febvre, Herlings, Seewer, Bonacorsi, Horgmo, Watson, Coldenhoff and Vlaanderen. Fernandez who was 19th has been disqualified from the moto for taking the pit lane but not stopping.
Renaux a near crash and Febvre moved into second and then Renaux crashed and looks like he is out of the moto. What a horrible day for these riders. Laps running out and its Coenen, Febvre, Herlings, Seewer, Bonacorsi, Horgmo, Coldenhoff, Watson, Vlaanderen, and Pancar. Renaux being carried off the track by ambulance workers. Coenen goes 1-1 and win his first MXGP and his 11th GP win in his career.
