  • Race Report

Nestaan Husqvarna factory rider Lucas Coenen has again won with a very consistent and impressive performance at the MXGP of Turkey. It was his eigth GP win in his career and his third in the last four GPs.

The Belgian teenager, who continues to close the points gap to team-mate, Kay De Wolf put together a 1-1 showing and the points gap, with two rounds remaining is now 44 points, Kay de Wolf 873 points and Lucas Coenen 829pts. Second overall was Kay De Wolf with 4-2 and third Simon Langenfelder with 2-4.

Lucas Coenen: Yes, of course (it was a great day). My second race start was not bad, I think I was fourth and Kay got me when I made a mistake. I knew I had to get it back and I did that and said (to myself), that is how you do it and now we have a couple of good weeks and we keep positive. Two rounds to go, we will have fun.

Kay De Wolf: It was a difficult weekend. I felt good in qualifying and then something happened that shouldn’t happen, and I struggled in the first moto an the track was slippery, but I turned it around in the second moto and good for the big picture. Now we go to China.

MX2 Moto Two

De Wolf in the lead in the second MX2 moto ahead of his team-mate, Coenen, then came Prugnieres, Haarup, Everts, Langenfelder, Elzinga, Reisulis, Zanchi and Benistant. Prugnieres moved into second place and Coenen tried to pass the Frenchman, but he wasn’t having any of it as the touched slightly.

Lap one and it was de Wolf, Prugnieres, Coenen, Haarup, Everts, Langenfelder, Elzinga, Reisulis, Zanchi, and Oliver 10th. Benistant 11th, Adamo 12th. Prugnieres all over de Wolf for the lead and the young Frenchman really showing good speed.

MX2 again close, but not a lot of passing in the moto until now, but still the top three only three seconds apart, although De Wolf getting away a little. Coenen into second on lap five and he will no doubt head out after de Wolf in the lead.

Haarup moved into third as he also passed Prugnieres and on lap six it was de Wolf with a 2.6 second lead over Coenen, then Haarup, Prugnieres, Everts, Langenfelder, Elzinga, Reisulis, Zanchi and McLellan.

Everts into fourth with a nice pass on Prugnieres, and then the Frenchman crashed as Langenfelder also tried to get past. Langenfelder off the track but didn’t lose too much time on the Belgian. On lap eight it was de Wolf, Coenen, Haarup, Everts, Langenfelder, Elzinga, Reisulis, Zanchi, McLellan and Oliver.

Langenfelder moved past Everts for fourth place and Adamo passed Oliver for 10th place. Up front on lap nine the lead by de Wolf over Coenen was 1.4 seconds, with Haarup six seconds back from the leader.

Coenen all over de Wolf for the lead and Langengelder chasing Haarup for third place, with Everts, Elzinga, Reisulis, McLellan, Zanchi and Adamo filling out the top ten. So, close the racing in MX2, but there continued to be a small gap to not make it sensational battles.

De Wolf holding strong in first with four laps remaining, but Coenen just sitting, waiting and preying on his championship rival. 14 laps done and the fight for first and second is very real, as is the battle for third and fourth. Amazing how close De Wolf and Coenen are to each other in speed.

Coenen all over the back wheel of De Wolf with one lap remaining and while De Wolf looks calm, Coenen looks very aggressive and desperate to get a 1-1 performance and all those important points. Coenen into the lead and he goes 1-1 for the GP victory and gained major points this weekend.
