Big Winners At Anaheim
It is always fun to look through the winners of major events and when Feld sent over their information on A1, we were not surprised by some of the big premier class winners at this race, run at the legendary Angel stadium, but we did like the idea of relating that info to you guys.
As you can see in the article, "A1 The story in 2025", we put online this morning, all the winners are listed, but let’s put them down as a separate story, because those winners, are worth it.
Of course, in the 1970s, it all started with the first two big legends of the AMA racing scene, Marty Smith and Bob Hannah, who won in 1976 and 1977, while Kent Howerton became the first two time winner of Anaheim in 1979 and 1980, before David Bailey joined him as a two time winner in 1983 and a that legendary 1986 race.
The next man to double up at Anaheim, was the King, Jeremy McGrath, but he really owned Angel stadium, with eight wins in total, those coming in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000 (twice) and 2001 (twice), before Ricky Carmichael also took eight wins in 2001, 2002, 2003 (twice), 2005 (twice), 2006 (twice). His biggest rivals, Chad Reed and James Stewart also took a bunch of wins at Anaheim, Reed with 8 and Stewart with eight. Incredibly, Stewarts wins were between 2006 until 2011 and Reeds 2003 until 2014, so an 11-year period the Aussie owned the place.
It might be added, McGrath also won there on two occasions in the 125cc class and Stewart also won there on two occasions on the small bike, so those two are considered the best of all time at Anaheim, in total main event wins, both with 10 main events wins each.
Ryan Villopoto owned the place for a number of years, winning in 2010, 2011, 2012 (twice), 2013 and he also won in the Lites class in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Roczen and Ryan Dungey also had a lot of success in Anaheim, Roczen winning five times on the 450, starting in 2014 and his fifth win coming in 2022 (he also won once on the Lites class).
Dungey won on five occasions in the premier class and three times on the Lite bike. Interestingly, Dungey won his first in his rookie season in 2010 and his last seven years later in 2017. Eli Tomac has also won there on four occasions on the 450 and three times in the Lites class, so seven in total. Cooper Webb owned the Lites class, with wins in 2015 (twice), 2016, 2017 and 2018, before he won on the 450 in 2019, and 2024.
Ivan Tedesco never won a 450 main at Anaheim, but he did win the Lites class on five occasions and Kevin Windham won on the 450 on two occasions and in the Lites class once. Interestingly, from the last eight years, only Jett Lawrence has transfer a 250 class win into a 450 class win, with his 250 win in 2023 and obviously his 450 win in 2024.
