Australian Supercross - Opinions

For decades, Australian supercross has been a happy place for America's leading riders to race, pick up some prizemoney and for the sport down under to grow along with it.

Right back to the 1980s when a bunch of GP riders headed to Australia to race a series of supercross events around the country, from current MXGP paddock favourite, Roger Harvey and Grand Prix legends in Danny Laporte and Hakan Carlqvist, but also names from USA, like Jimmy Holley, Jimmy Ellis, Mike Bell, Danny Chandler, Travis Pastrana, Darrell Shultz, Rex Staten, Marty Smith, Jimmy Weinert, Mike Larocco, Jason Anderson and even the AMA GOAT, Ricky Carmichael and AMA supercross GOAT, Jeremy McGrath (who visited long before he became the greatest supercross rider of all time).

Yes, Australian supercross has always been healthy, but currently, with the backing of the Lawrence brothers, the Aus X Open has returned and again, we have names like Jett and Hunter Lawrence, Cooper Webb, Dean Wilson and Joey Savatgy. Again, the sport in Australia gets a big boost and their riders learn from the best in the World.

They even got a round of the World Supercross, with Eli Tomac and Ken Roczen banging bars.

Three riders were asked today, about the current situation of Australian supercross. Local man Luke Clout, current red plate owner in the Aussie series, Joet Savatgy and defending Australian supercross champion, Dean Wilson gave their opinions of the series and its future and it is clear, they all love it.

Savatgy: It's been enjoyable. You know one thing about me coming down here is it's always been a very positive interaction with the fans and they've always been receptive and welcoming. So for me, that's always makes my job a little easier. As far as the deal to race here, it definitely came together last minute and I'm glad I did it. I was at a point in my career where I didn't know what to do because I had other options. Similar to what I did last year and I just didn't feel like I could afford to do that. Just where I'm at, I want to race and I want to try to continue to get better. So, the decision was straightforward, but yeah, it's been good. Dino and I obviously are almost neighbours, we don't live very far from each other back in Florida and I have a lot of respect for Dean, What he's accomplished a lot of good things in his career. He is one of the older ones, but he still knows how to throw it down. Definitely, it hasn't been easy and you know, I've learned before, nothing's over till it's over. So yeah, it's the goal to go out tomorrow and do my job and perform to my ability. And I think we'll be in a good place.

Luke Clout: It's great. I mean, look at the guys that are sitting next to me at the moment. Like you can't get much bigger than that in the sport of Supercross worldwide, so, to have these guys here racing, just shows the growth of the sport. Like we were talking about before, just the potential that this series has is unbelievable. So, I think in a couple of years, it keeps growing.

Dean Wilson: This year they really put in a big effort. Everything just looked a lot better. A lot more fans, and they've done a really great job this year and I think every year it's just going to get better. It's been a really good series, really cool venues as well. I felt Wollongong was really cool. You know the stadiums right on the water. And yeah, I think they've done a great job and the whole Oz supercross crew. You know something as simple as we had the cardboard top blocks at the beginning, which I love those, because when you hit them, they just kind of diminish and you're pretty safe. But then they're they're kind of experimenting with tough blocks to make it better so, something even as small as that, you know. Over under structures and just everything they've done a great job.
