Assen and MXoN 2027
Great to see that the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations could end up back at the Assen circuit in The Netherlands. Of course, back in 2019 the Dutch team won there, in a stunning event and we know this road racing facility has everything you want for an event as big as the Nations. Below is a cool article from Dutch new website, RTV.
The largest motocross event in the world, the Motocross of Nations, may return to the TT Circuit in 2027. Organiser Lee van Dam, who managed to bring the event to the Netherlands in 2019, is hopeful.
"We have been asked by the international motorsport federation FIM and the rights holder of the MXGP world championship Infront to organise the Motocross of Nations again. That is a great honour," says Van Dam, who has been organising all kinds of events at the TT Circuit for years, such as Jack's Racing Day. "It only depends on the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. We are waiting for a subsidy to be awarded."
In 2015, Van Dam and his company LDP International transformed the TT Circuit into a large sandpit for the MXGP Grand Prix of the Netherlands for the first time. Tens of thousands of spectators watched the world's best motocross riders start where the Geert Timmerbocht gravel pit normally is, and then jump over bumps on the straight.
Briton Shaun Simpson crowned himself the winner in the toughest class, Glenn Coldenhoff rode to the podium. Jeffrey Herlings was the big favorite in the MX2 class, but was unable to participate due to an injury.
The unique formula of the Dutch Grand Prix, building a motocross track on a road racing circuit, was a success. The TT Circuit has been converted into a motocross track for four years in a row. The highlight will come in 2019, when the Motocross of Nations will be held in Assen. In soaking wet conditions, under the watchful eyes of the king, the Netherlands will win the largest motocross event in the world.
Motocross of Nations is a nations' competition in which the three best riders per country participate. It is held in a different country each year.
"It's the Olympic Games of motorsports," says an enthusiastic Van Dam, who would like to see the Netherlands shine again in Assen. "We are pioneers in the world of motocross. Last season, Lotte van Drunen became champion in the women's category and Kay de Wolf in the MX2. We also have top riders in the MXGP such as Jeffrey Herlings, Glenn Coldenhoff and Calvin Vlaanderen."
During the motocross, the riders compete in three racing classes. The higher they finish, the fewer points a rider gets. The country that collects the fewest points during the event is the champion.
